The Apprentice (UK series twelve)

Series Twelve of The Apprentice (UK), a British reality television series, began broadcasting in the UK during 2016 from 6 October to 18 December on BBC One; due to the UK EU membership referendum, Euro 2016, and the 2016 Rio Olympics taking place during the Summer, the BBC postponed the series' broadcast until mid-Autumn. Eighteen candidates took part, naming their teams Titans and Nebula, with Alana Spencer winning the series.

Unlike previous series, the programme was aired on Thursdays but within its regular timeslot, with two specials airing alongside it towards its final weeks, both being new editions - "The Final Five" on 13 December, and "Why I Fired Them" on 16 December.

Before the start of the series, it was reported that Alana Spencer had been accused of making racist comments against the travelling community through social media back in 2010, using such terms as "jobless pikey scum" and "chav pikeys", even saying to one woman "control your children you pikey fat bitch". Spencer later apologised for her comments once it became public, claiming that these had been "the words of a naive young girl from a number of years ago".

Prior to her appearance on the show, Natalie Hughes became the centre of media controversy after she was revealed to had formerly been accused of being involved in drug dealing, including the supply of heroin and cocaine. Their reports stated that both she and her boyfriend at the time, who was found to be a drug-dealer, were taken to Glasgow High Court to face trial for the offences they were charged with, though these were dropped against her after prosecutors accepted a plea of not guilty from Natalie, while her boyfriend was jailed for more than two years. Natalie refused to comment about the incident. A few days after the first episode, The Sun reported that Natalie's brother had admitted to breaching copyright laws after he had been caught selling pirated DVDs and CDs from a market stall. She once more refused to comment about the story.
