General elections were held in Thailand on January 6, 2001. 500 seats in the House of Representatives (Sapha Poothaen Rassadorn) were at stake. In accordance with the recently enacted 1997 constitution of Thailand, the House of Representatives was composed of 400 members elected from single-member constituencies and 100 members elected from national party lists on a proportional basis.

Voting figures show the votes cast for the national list members.

The Thai Rak Thai party co-founded and led by Thaksin Shinawatra won the largest amount of votes on a populist platform of economic growth and anti-corruption. It increased its amount of seats in the House of Representatives from 248 to 286 by merging with the New Aspiration Party after the election. The Thai Rak Thai party had the mandate to form a coalition government with the Thai Nation Party. The Democrat Party's platform supported neoliberal, IMF-backed economic reforms. It went into the opposition with the National Development Party.
