Sir Terence Alexander Hawthorne English KBE FRCS FRCP (born 3 October 1932) is a South African-born British retired cardiac surgeon. He was Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon, Papworth Hospital and Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge, 1973–1995.He performed Britain's first successful heart transplant in January 1979 after which Papworth became one of the leading heart and lung transplant centers in Europe.

He was President of the Royal College of Surgeons 1989-92, Master of St Catharine's College, Cambridge, 1993–2000, and President of the British Medical Association 1995-1996. He was knighted (KBE) in 1991.

His first wife, Ann, with whom he had 4 children, died in 2009. In 2002 he married Judith English, Principal of St Hilda's College, Oxford 2001-2007.
