Tennis records of the Open Era – men's singles

The Open Era is the current era of professional tennis. It began in 1968 when the Grand Slam tournaments allowed professional players to compete with amateurs, ending the division that had persisted since the dawn of the sport in the 19th century. The first "open" event was the British Hard Court Championships, held in Bournemouth, England, followed by the inaugural open Grand Slam event, the French Open, a month later.

Why isn't Roy Emerson or Rod Laver on this list? They won 12 & 11 Grand Slams respectively. They were no 1 & 2 on the list until Pete Sampras broke the record and then later on were passed by Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Please make corrections.

Note that Agassi and Nadal had won an Olympic gold medal prior to completing their Career Grand Slams. Some consider this a "Career Golden Slam".

There have been three prominent men's tours during the Open Era, each with a year-end championship involving only its top players for that year.

(1970–present) This is a combination of the year-end championship for two separate tours: the ITF Grand Prix that ran until 1989, and the ATP Tour that replaced it. For record-keeping purposes, the ATP has incorporated the entire history of the ITF Masters Grand Prix alongside its ATP World Tour Finals; thus they are both listed as "ATP" here. In total, these year-end events have been held at numerous venues around the globe and played on several surfaces (indoor hard courts since 2006).
