Synth-funk is a music genre that combines synthpop and Funk most prominent in the late 1970's and the early 1980's.. This should not be confused with electro-funk which is a similar genre combining electro and funk. This should also not be confused with the Minneapolis sound which combines funk rock with new wave and synthpop that was pioneered by Prince.
Synth-funk originated in the late 1970's and early 1980's and could be used to describe the work of Prince and The Gap Band along with some material by The Talking Heads (Once in a Lifetime and Burning Down The House) although not all of their material would fall under this genre. Level 42 have also incorporated this genre into some of their music as well. Howard Jones also had a hit with Things Can Only Get Better which incorporates the synthesizer with basic funk beats along with elements of new wave which makes this a basic synth-funk song. Michael Jackson can also be classified as synth-funk on some of his material. Devo can also be classified as synth-funk as well. Synth-funk was believed to have increased in popularity following the release of Queen's 1980 single Another One Bites The Dust from their album The Game which fuses the synthesizer with funk rock Queen's 1982 album Hot Space also heavily featured the synthesizer along with funk elements making it suitable for the synth-funk genre.
