Synack is an American technology company. It is based in Menlo Park, California. It has a team of security researchers who hack into client networks to highlight vulnerabilities.
The company was founded around 2012 by Jay Kaplan and Mark Kuhr, both former NSA agents. Kuhr became CTO, and Kaplan became CEO. In February 2014, the company raised $25 million in funding, with 40 employees and plans to double in size that year. They were in 32 different countries. On April 24, 2014, the company announced it had secured Series A funding from Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers, Google Ventures, Allegis Capital, and Derek Smith of Shape Security. As of 2015, the company was based in Redwood City, California. It used a network of freelancer security analysts in 35 countries, who get paid to check for vulnerabilities and security problems. Synack had also developed Hydra, a platform built to spot vulnerabilities and look for out-of-date software for clients. The first form of Hydra went live on October 21, 2015. By April 11, 2017, the company had 100 employees as well as a network of freelance hackers. It had 100 customers. On April 11, 2017, it was reported that Synack had raised $21m from Microsoft Ventures, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, and Singtel. Prior investors such as GGV Capital, GV, and Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers also took part in the funding round, bringing the total money raised by the company to $55 million since its founding.
