Sunderland (/ˈsʌndərlənd/ (About this sound listen), locally /ˈsʊndlənd/) is a city at the centre of the City of Sunderland metropolitan borough, in Tyne and Wear, North East England, 10 miles southeast of Newcastle upon Tyne, 12 miles northeast of Durham, 101 miles southeast of Edinburgh and 240 miles north of London. It is a coastal city at the mouth of the River Wear with beaches at Roker and Seaburn. The etymology of Sunderland is derived from "sundered land", meaning land "sundered", or set aside for a special purpose, from those belonging to the monastery at Monkwearmouth.
