Sumpter is a town in Sauk County, Wisconsin, United States. The population was 1,021 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Bluffview is located in the town.

The community was once called "Kingston," and this name conflicted with a same-named community in the state. At the start of the Civil War, the name was changed to "Sumter," in commemoration of the Battle of Fort Sumter, but an error in spelling resulted in the current name.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.8 square miles (97.9 km²), of which, 37.7 square miles (97.6 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km²) of it (0.29%) is water.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,021 people, 402 households, and 260 families residing in the town. The population density was 27.1 people per square mile (10.5/km²). There were 458 housing units at an average density of 12.1 per square mile (4.7/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 91.48% White, 0.29% African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.20% Asian, 7.15% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.99% of the population.

There were 402 households out of which 31.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.0% were married couples living together, 10.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 26.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 3.05.
