The Sultan of the Sultanate of Oman is the monarch and head of state of Oman. It is the most powerful position in the country. The sultans of Oman are members of the Al Said dynasty, which is the ruling family of Oman since the mid-18th century.

Since 23 July 1970, Qaboos bin Said al Said is the current sultan.

In Oman, the eldest son of the reigning Sultan succeeds to the throne on his death. In the absence of a male heir, the reigning Sultan may nominate a brother or other male relative from amongst the descendants of Sultan Said bin Sultan. The current Sultan Qaboos of Oman has no children and has indicated that once he is dead it will be up to the Royal family to meet and agree on a candidate. However, if the royal family cannot agree on a candidate, then the Defence Council will decide, based on the two names Sultan Qaboos placed in sealed envelopes prior to his death.

Standard of the Sultan of Oman.
