Sujeito a Guincho is a clarinet sextet from São Paulo, Brazil. It started as a quartet, featuring Sérgio Burgani, Edmilson Nery, Luca Raele and Luiz Afonso Montanha, music professors who teach in and around the city of São Paulo while playing in the country’s top orchestras, such as the Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP) and the Orquestra Sinfônica Municipal (OSM). They first got together in 1991, eager to expand the music repertoire available for their instrument.
In 1995, Sujeito a Guincho received the Eldorado Award, one of Brazil’s top music awards, in the best instrumental group category. In the following year their first album, self-titled, received the prestigious Sharp Music Award in the best instrumental album category.
In 1996 Nivaldo Orsi joined in playing both clarinet and bass clarinet. Since then, Sujeito a Guincho has been featured three times at the ClarinetFest (Lubbock 1997, Columbus 1998 and New Orleans 2001) by special invitation of the International Clarinet Association. International performances include Miami and Washington (2005), alongside Monica Salmaso, and Moscow in 2008. Their second album, “Die Klarinetmaschine”, was released in 1999 by YB Music, to great public and critical acclaim.
Today, Sujeito a Guincho continues to write and play original arrangements to a wide range of works, composing its own music, with a sophisticated juxtaposition of old and new influences that invite the listener to an experience that feels both Brazilian and universal at the same time.
In Portuguese, Sujeito a Guincho means “subject to tow-away”, as in the case of an improperly parked car. Among Brazilian musicians, it also refers to a clarinet player’s constant fear of producing a squeak while playing (the Portuguese word for "squeak" - guincho, means also the tow truck). Either way, to choose this expression as a name for your clarinet quintet would be risky, unless you had a good sense of humour and five of the best clarinet players in Brazil. Such is the case with the Sujeito a Guincho quintet.
Presently Edmilson Nery is back the group since 2014.
