The sixth season of the American legal drama Suits was ordered on July 1, 2015, and began airing on USA Network in the United States July 13, 2016. The season is produced by Hypnotic Films & Television and Universal Cable Productions, and the executive producers are Doug Liman, David Bartis, and series creator Aaron Korsh. The season has six series regulars playing employees at the fictional Pearson Specter Litt law firm in Manhattan: Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Sarah Rafferty, and Gina Torres.
Gina Torres left the show following the summer season due to her contract being up, and she will be starring in ABC's The Catch.
The season starts off with Mike beginning his two-year jail sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution of Danbury. Once in prison, he meets Frank Gallow, who poses as his cell mate and pretends to befriend him during his first night in, only to later reveal himself as a criminal who was incarcerated years ago by Harvey when he worked in the New York Country District Attorney's Office. Gallow uses the power he has over the guards and his fellow prison mates to gain information from Mike (including Rachel's cell phone number) that could help him "get back at Harvey through him", and thus becomes the season's primary antagonist.
Once he has found out the truth about Gallow and his intentions, Mike meets his actual cell mate, Kevin Miller, who happens to be the son-in-law of William Sutter, a corrupt business man who wants Harvey to represent him. Even though Harvey rejects the offer at first due to his refusal to involve himself with a shady investor, he reconsiders after he is informed by Sean Cahill that Mike could cut a deal with the SEC and be released immediately if he informs on Kevin, as the SEC is investigating his father-in-law for insider trading. Mike, who gets to befriend Kevin despite their initial setback, faces a moral dilemma that follows him throughout the season.
Meanwhile, Rachel takes a pro-bono case with the purpose of "getting Mike out of her head", but soon becomes deeply committed with the story of a man who is facing death row due to a crime he claims he didn't commit. Jessica, who is initially obsessed with saving her firm from the crisis (which is that everyone has left apart from Harvey, Louis, Rachel, Donna and Gretchen), later joins Rachel in the case and begins to question the reason why she became a lawyer in the first place.
