Steve Etches is a plumber in Kimmeridge on the Isle of Purbeck. He was born around 1949 and, from an early age, he found, collected and restored fossils on the Jurassic Coast. His collection, known as The Etches Collection, is now housed in a purpose-built museum – the Museum of Jurassic Marine Life which was built to replace the local village hall and opened in 2016. His first find was a flint fossil sea urchin, which he found at age 5, and his collection now contains about 2,300 specimens. He has won prizes for his paleontology and was made a Member of the British Empire by the Queen in 2014.
