Stephen "Steve" Yates is a former White House official and Idaho Republican Party chairman.
Yates was born in Maryland. Yates served a Mission (LDS Church) to Taiwan, where he became fluent in Chinese.
After his mission he became an analyst for the National Security Agency.
Yates received a master's degree in China Studies from the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies.
Yates has been married to his wife Diana since 1990 and lived in Idaho Falls, Idaho since 2011.
Yates was an international affairs analyst at the Department of Defense from 1991-1996.
Yates was a senior policy analyst at the The Heritage Foundation from 1996-2001.
Yates served as Vice President Dick Cheney's Deputy National Security Adviser from 2001-2005, starting at the age of 32.
Yates since 2006 has owned and operated his own Asian policy and consulting firm called DC International Advisory.
