Stearns is a census-designated place (CDP) in McCreary County, Kentucky, United States. The population was 1,586 at the 2000 census. It was founded by Justus Smith Stearns.

Stearns is located at 36°41′53″N 84°28′36″W / 36.69806°N 84.47667°W / 36.69806; -84.47667 (36.697976, -84.476776).

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.0 square miles (10 km2), of which 4.0 square miles (10 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) (0.50%) is water.

At the 2000 census, there were 1,586 people, 641 households and 464 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 396.7 per square mile (153.1/km²). There were 707 housing units at an average density of 176.8/sq mi (68.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.36% White, 0.95% Native American, 0.06% from other races, and 0.63% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.38% of the population.

There were 641 households, of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.0% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.46 and the average family size was 2.92.
