The football rivalry between Sporting and Travadores is considered the hugest rivalry in both Cape Verde and the island of Santiago and the city Praia. One of the largest rivalries in the nation and the region after the Mindelo derby (or São Vicente derby) featuring Mindelense and Derby which is also the longest rivalry. It forms one of the rivalry being called the Capital Derby (Derby do Capital) or the Praia Derby (Derby da Praia).
Since its creation of the regional championships in 1953, there had been around 100 matches that featured Sporting and Travadores, there were also over 100 matches with the cup competitions.
On a round 8 match on February 22, 2015, Sporting originally was 2-0 over Travadores, Sporting fielded an ineligible player, Sporting lost three points and fully crippled their chance for winning a championship along with their entry into the national championships. Also this was Travadores' last win. Sporting's last win over Travadores was on March 18, 2017.
The rivalry is the Capeverdean version of the Lisbonese Derby (Derby de Lisboa) or Derby Eterno (Eternal Derby) which features Sporting Lisbon and Benfica, it is called the Derby Eterno da Praia. As Sporting Praia is an affiliate to Lisbon and Travadores is an affiliate to Benfica. Another Benfica affiliate is in Santiago and is also in Praia and has the same name of Benfica. Sporting Praia is also rival to Benfica Praia.
The rivalry is the second longest in Cape Verde after the Mindelo derby. The Sporting–Travadores rivalry has never challenged at the national championships.
Sporting Praia is one of the most successful football (sooccer) club in Cape Verde, having won about 35 official titles (13 national and 22 regional) compared to Travadores' 12 official titles (3 national and 2 regional). On the other hand, Sporting boast of their better performance in African competitions (no Capeverdean team has ever won an African title). Their greatest success is the participation in the First Round in the 1992 African Cup of Champions Clubs and the 2009 CAF Champions League. Sporting appeared once in the 2001 CAF Cup Winners' Cup and did not exceed the preliminaries. While Travadores did not exceed the preliminaries in 1995 and 1997 nor the First Round of the CAF Cup.
