The individual Confederate States of America issued many denominations of banknotes during the American Civil War. These notes supplemented the "federal" issues from the Confederate States of America, and the bank notes that were in wide circulation at the time. The confederacy allowed every state to make its own currency because they believed it was their right to make currency. This contributed to the inflation of the confederate currency. When the confederate states taxed its states some states did not tax their people, instead they produced more currency in order to pay their taxes.
