Soo, also spelled Su or So, is a rare Korean family name, a single-syllable Korean given name, and an element in many two-syllable Korean given names. Its meaning differs based on the hanja used to write it.
As a family name, Soo may be written with two different hanja, one meaning "water" (; 물 수), and the other meaning "shore" or "bank" (; 물가 수). The former has two bon-gwan, including Gangneung, Gangwon-do in what is today South Korea. The latter has one bon-gwan, Gimhae, Gyeongsangnam-do, also in what is today South Korea. The 2000 South Korean census found 199 people with these family names.
There are 67 hanja with the reading "soo", and variant forms of seven of those, on the South Korean government's official list of hanja which may be registered for use in given names. 66 are listed in the table at right (one is not included due to encoding issues).
