Smithville is a town in Monroe County, Mississippi. The population was 942 at the 2010 census. Smithville is the birthplace of Rod Brasfield, a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Smithville is one of the older towns in Monroe county. It is located on the Gaines Trace Road which was surveyed by E. P. Gaines in 1807 at the request of President Thomas Jefferson. The land Smithville sits on was owned by Che-lah-cha-chubby, a Chickasaw Indian chief or sub-chief, and a trading post was established in 1820 at the location of what is now the intersection of highway 25 and Hatley-Smithville road. Gaines Trace was a major route for settlers who migrated from the northeast.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.6 square miles (4.1 km2), of which 1.5 square miles (3.9 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.26 km2) (8.12%) is water.
On April 27, 2011 at 3:47 P.M CDT an EF5 tornado struck the town. Its winds are estimated to have peaked at 205 miles per hour (330 km/h). 16 people were killed, and 40 people were injured.
As of the census of 2000, there were 882 people, 365 households, and 243 families residing in the town. The population density 602.1 people per square mile (233.2/km²). There were 404 housing units at an average density of 275.8 per square mile (106.8/km²). The racial makeup of the town is 97.62% White, 1.59% African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.23% from other races, and 0.23% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.79% of the population.
