Smith Micro Software, Inc., founded in 1982 by William W. Smith, Jr., is a global developer of software solutions headquartered in Aliso Viejo, California and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company also maintains multiple international development centers in Belgrade, Serbia; Braga, Portugal, and Stockholm, Sweden. Smith Micro's broad technology portfolio includes solutions for wireless operators and other communications service providers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original device manufacturers (ODMs), enterprise businesses, and individual consumers.

As part of its wireless business segment, Smith Micro provides solutions for digital family safety, IoT device management, wireless network connectivity, location-based services and security, Big Data analytics, mobile app development, and carrier-grade visual voicemail. Recent acquisitions have enabled Smith Micro to add family location services, parental controls, mobile app development and Wi-Fi provisioning to its portfolio of wireless solutions.

In addition to its wireless solutions, smith Micro also develops popular software titles for 2D and 3D graphics animation and illustration, as well as productivity solutions such as digital file compression, management, and transfer. Smith Micro's graphics and animation software includes Poser, a professional 3D Figure Design and Animation platform. Moho, a complete solution for 2D animation, and MotionArtist, an easy to use tool for comic animation and presentation design. These programs are used by professional artists, major entertainment studios and graphics firms to create award-winning movies, television shows, advertisements, internet media content, 3D gaming and much more.

Smith Micro's first product in 1982 was Stock Portfolio System, which was quickly followed by MarketLink. MarketLink was a solution for downloading stock quotes using an analog modem. By the time Smith Micro reached its IPO in 1995, it was one of the leading names in fax and modem connectivity. Smith Micro appears on NASDAQ under the symbol SMSI. By the late '90s, dial-up Internet access was being replaced by cable internet, DSL, and wireless broadband technologies due to their substantially higher speeds and reliability. This change led Smith Micro to re-apply its network connection expertise to new, wireless and mobility applications. Network connection management became a specialization of the company and, as such, Smith Micro developed products of interest, such as QuickLink, for large-scale mobile network operators such as AT&T, Bell Canada, Orange, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, and Vodafone. While fax and modem-related products were still being sold, the QuickLink family of wireless connection management applications became the company's primary source of revenue in the early 2000s.
