Sir Andrew Agnew, 8th Baronet


Sir Andrew Agnew, 8th Baronet DL (2 January 1818 – 25 March 1892) was a British politician and baronet.

Born in Edinburgh, he was the oldest son of Sir Andrew Agnew, 7th Baronet and his wife Madeline Carnegie, daughter of Sir David Carnegie, 4th Baronet. In 1849, he succeeded his father as baronet. Agnew attended Harrow School and served then as cavalry officer. He rose to the rank of captain in the 4th Light Dragoons.

He was appointed Deputy Lieutenant of Wigtownshire in 1843 and Vice Lord Lieutenant in 1852. Four years later, he entered the British House of Commons and represented Wigtownshire as Member of Parliament until 1868.

Agnew died in 1892 and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his eldest son Andrew.

On 20 August 1846, he married Lady Mary Arabella Louisa Noel, daughter of Charles Noel, 1st Earl of Gainsborough and Arabella Williams. They had 13 children; eight daughters and five sons. Among their children, Mary married the 11th Baron Kinnaird. His daughter Constance married the Revd James Davidson and their son, Nevile Davidson, became the Moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland.
