The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) is the national police force of the Republic of Sierra Leone, that is primarily responsible for law enforcement and crime investigation throughout Sierra Leone. The heavily armed unit of the Sierra Leone Police is known as the Operations Support Division, widely known as OSD, which is primarily responsible to put down riot, violence protest, and severely violence activities.

The Sierra Leone Police is headed by the Inspector General of police (IGP), who is the overall head of the police force. The Inspector General of Police is appointed by the president of Sierra Leone, and the president has the constitutional authority to fire the Inspector General of Police at any time. The current Inspector General of the Sierra Leone Police is Francis Munu.

Munu has headed the Sierra Leone Police Force since 2010 when he was appointed by Sierra Leone"s president Ernest Bai Koroma to succeed the previous Inspector General of Police Brima Acha Kamara, who was appointed by former president Ahmad Tejan Kabbah but was sacked by president Koroma in 2010.

The Sierra Leone Police Investigate crimes, however, the Sierra Leone Ministry of Justice (headed by the Attorney General of Sierra Leone), has the legal authority to charge and prosecute major crimes.

The Sierra Leone Police was established by the British colony back in 1894 and is one of the oldest police forces in West Africa.

The key mission of the Sierra Leone Police include to prevent crime, to protect life and property, to detect and prosecute offenders, to maintain public order, to ensure safety and security, to enhance access to justice and to ensure police primacy for internal security and safety.
