The Sapotaweyak Cree Nation is a mainly Cree, yet with a unique mixture of Plains Cree, Swampy Cree and Saulteaux languages, a unique dialect shared with Wuski Sipik Reserve to the south west of the community. First Nations band government whose reserves are located in Central Manitoba north-east of Swan River. They have a number of reserves spread about but majority of reserve land is near the shore of Lake Winnipegosis. The largest on-reserve population occupies Shoal River Indian Reserve 65A (which is the main center of the community) which is located adjacent to [[Pelican Rapids, Manitoba|Pelican Rapids Also known as the "Metis Side" to the local people] About half the communities population resides on the reserve while the other half live off reserve.].
