Shibu Mitra


Shibu Mitra is a veteran Indian film director and producer. In his career spanning more than 40 feature films, he has been amongst the more experienced Bollywood film directors. His movies were very popular in the 80's, the most successful amongst them being Aag Hi Aag, Ilzaam, Durga, Aakhri Goli, Paanch Quaidi, Insaaf Main Karoonga and others.

Shibu was born in a Bengali family to Suresh Chandra and Suruchi Mitra in Kolkata on 25 March 1948. His father was a lawyer, and mother a principal of a school. Both his brothers pursued careers in Law, while Shibu's fascination for films drew him towards a career in Bollywood. Shibu joined the prestigious Film and Television Institute of India (FTII Pune).

After graduating from FTII Pune, Shibu assisted Industry veteran Basu Chatterjee. He received his grooming in commercial film making from him and soon proceeded to direct his first venture Bindiya Aur Bandook. This 1972 low budget movie starring newcomer Kiran Kumar and Asha Sachdev went on to become a huge blockbuster and was amongst the biggest hits of 1972. He received instant recognition with this film and gradually became very popular amongst film distributors as his films always recovered their costs and made money for everybody.

Shibu Mitra has led a successful film career and has been instrumental in the successful launch of many stars such as Govinda, Chunky Pandey, Neetu Singh (as Heroin), Danny Dengzongpa, Kiran Kumar, Raza Murad and others. Recognizing his immense contribution to the Industry he was awarded the "Star Maker of the Decade" Award at the Eighteenth Filmgoers Award 1987.
