Shanghai American School (SAS) is a non-profit, co-educational international preparatory school established in 1912 in Shanghai, China. It has a history of more than a 100 years and is well-known among the international schools in Shanghai. SAS has two campuses in Shanghai. The Puxi campus is located in Huacao Town, Minhang District and the Pudong campus is located in the Shanghai Links Executive Community in Pudong.
The SAS Mission Statement states that it inspires in all students a passion for learning, a commitment to act with integrity and compassion, and the courage to live their dreams.
Shanghai American School, a non-profit organization, opened its doors on September 17, 1912, with 38 students in the old campus on North Szechuen Road. Today, there are more than 3000 students from approximately 40 countries, and nearly 400 teachers from over 27 countries attending the school. Both campuses offer an American-based curriculum from pre-kindergarten to 12th grade, and offer the AP and IB education systems from 9th to 12th grade.
Shanghai American School offers courses in both the International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) as well as the AP Capstone Diploma. SAS offers a wide variety of course selections within both programs, and course selection outside of the IB or AP.
The SAS high school requires students to earn the following minimum credits to graduate: English - 4 Math - 3 Science - 3 Social Studies - 3 Foreign Language - 2 Physical Education - 2 Electives - 5
Established in 1912, the Puxi campus is located in the southwest of Shanghai, west of the Hongqiao International Airport. There are separate buildings for the Elementary/Kindergarten, Middle School, and High School, with a separate building for the HS Social Studies, English, and Art classrooms. Additional facilities include a finance house, library, two media centres, and two connected cafeterias. Sports facilities include two grass pitches capable of hosting sports such as rugby, soccer, and baseball, a track and field, three sports halls with basketball and volleyball courts, a fitness center, theater, and an aquatics center. Puxi campus cafeteria food is provided by Sodexo. Students are given a wide variety of meal options, including Italian, American, and Asian cuisine, as well as self-served salad bars, custom sandwich bars, and cafes. Other facilities include 2 "spider web" Climbing ropes, a playground, various basketball courts, a "Eagle Shop" which sells candy, snacks, SAS merchandise and school learning supplies and lastly an Apple tech help/provider/support. The elementary school is located north west of the campus and the middle school and high school in the southern area.
