Self-making bed

A self-making bed (also known as smart bed) is designed to automatically rearrange the bedding on a bed and prepare itself for use.

In June 2012, Dvice.com reported that Spanish furniture company OHEA had developed a self-making bed, which would rearrange the bedding in 50 seconds at the press of a button. The bed can be either set to automatic mode, which means that the bed will remake itself three seconds after the user gets up, or to manual model, which means the user has to touch a button in order for the device to start. The bed isn't compatible with normal blankets, pillows or duvets, so customers need to buy special bedding that works with the device. In 2016, the bed recirculated on social media and the Daily Mail noted that some people love the bed whilst others think it's just lazy.

The Smart Duvet uses fabric to make the bed through a network of air chambers. This is a breathable layer that is made of lightweight material. When activated it inflates the sheet's air chamber, placing the duvet and sheets back in position. Using an app, the user can preset a different bed-making time for each day of the week. It does not replace the existing bed and is non permanent so it can be used with existing duvet and duvet coverbedding. A a simple inflatable sheet placed between the duvet and the duvet cover, making it easy to clean and install.

Another approach involves the use of design to simplify the bed-making. For instance, Smart Bedding's bedding set connects the top sheet and duvet to make it for easy bed-making as well as a better night's sleep.

In the September 01, 1989 Calvin and Hobbes comic strip, Calvin asks Hobbes to help him create a bed making robot so he doesn't have to make the bed himself. However, after the robot is built, it turns out to be useless. Later that night, after Calvin's mother tells Calvin to go to sleep, Calvin and Hobbes enter Calvin's bedroom and realize that working on the robot all day obviated the need to make the bed.
