The Secretary of the Council of Ministers, whose official name is Undersecretary of State to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers (Italian: Sottosegretario di Stato alla Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri), is a senior member of the Italian Cabinet.
Unlike the other Undersecretaries to the Presidency of the Council of Ministers, the Secretary of the Council sits in the Cabinet and helps the Prime Minister in coordinating the government and its meetings. Thus, the Secretary is usually a person very close to the Prime Minister. The Secretary of the Council, which may not be confused with the largely ceremonial office of Deputy Prime Minister (not all Italian Cabinets inclue one), resembles that of the White House Chief of Staff.
The current Secretary of the Council is Maria Elena Boschi, a member of the Democratic Party, appointed on 12 December 2016 in the government led by Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni, also a Democrat. Boschi is the first woman to hold this office.
