The 12th Spanish General Courts were elected at the 2016 general election on 26 June and first met on 19 July. The previous 11th General Courts elected at the 2015 general election on 20 December had proven unable to elect a new Prime Minister, resulting in a 314-day political deadlock and a new election being held in June. Mariano Rajoy was invested as Prime Minister on 29 October by the Congress of Deputies and was sworn into office on 31 October. On the nomination of the Prime Minister, the Second Rajoy Government, or the 15th Government of Spain since the Spanish transition to democracy, was appointed.
