Sandersville Railroad


The Sandersville Railroad (reporting mark SAN) was originally operated from Tennille, Georgia, to Sandersville, Georgia and chartered in 1893 as a subsidiary of the Central of Georgia Railroad.

It was extended north five miles from Sandersville to a kaolin mine and processing plants near Deepstep, GA. It continues to operate the same nine miles as of 2005 and is nicknamed The Kaolin Road. The line owns 4 EMD SW1500 switchers numbered 1100, 1300, 1400 & 1500; along with an SW1200, numbered 1200. The line also owns two slugs, numbered 90 and 91. In addition, the line owns two cabooses and many freight cars, including hoppers, boxcars and woodchip cars. The railroad has a repair shop located in downtown Sandersville. The railroad interchanges with Norfolk Southern at Tennille, Georgia.

The Kaolin Road is owned and was started by the Tarbuttons of Sandersville, Georgia. Hugh Tarbutton has stood and stands as the President of Sandersville Railroad. Charles Tarbutton serves as assistant Vice President. The Tarbuttons seem to own a majority of the land and buildings in and around Sandersville, GA.
