Coordinates: 09°56′N 084°05′W / 9.933°N 84.083°W San José is the first canton in the province of San José in Costa Rica. The canton covers an area of 44.62 km² and has a population of 288,054 (6,455.71 inhabitants per km²). It includes the national capital city of San José.
The canton lies on a fertile plain at the southern end of the Central Valley (Valle Central). The "Río Virilla" and "Río Torres" form the border on the north, while the Río Tiribí marks the southern boundary. The canton encompasses San José Centro, although the Greater Metropolitan Area reaches far beyond in all directions.
Elevation averages 1,290 meters above sea level.
The Mayor of San José Canton is Sandra García Pérez (Partido Liberación Nacional).
Costa Rica 2011 Census appoints that the canton had 288,054 inhabitants, most of them living in neighbouring distritos of city center (the distritos of El Carmen, Merced, Hospital, and Catedral are commonly recognized as downtown; only 18% of the canton population inhabits these distritos).
