Line S28 is a S-Bahn line in the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn network. It is operated by Regiobahn GmbH, a partnership between the districts of Mettman, Düsseldorf, and Rhein-Kreis Neuss, through which the line runs. The line begins in Mettmann Stadtwald, it runs through Düsseldorf Hauptbahnhof branching off to Kaarst after passing through Neuss Hauptbahnhof. Its western terminus is Kaarster See. The line is operated by Regiobahn GmbH, using Talent DMUs at 20 minute intervals.
The state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the districts have been in talks to extend the line east to Wuppertal and west to either Viersen, or Mönchengladbach.
The line runs from Mettmann-Stadtwald to Düsseldorf-Gerresheim on the Düsseldorf-Derendorf–Dortmund Süd railway opened by the Rhenish Railway Company between 1875 and 1879, from Gerresheim to Düsseldorf on the Düsseldorf–Elberfeld railway built from 1838 to 1841 by the Düsseldorf-Elberfeld Railway Company, from Düsseldorf to Neuss on the Mönchengladbach–Düsseldorf railway opened by the Bergisch-Märkische Railway Company in 1870 and from Neuss to Kaarster See on the Neuss–Viersen railway opened by the Rhenish Railway Company in 1877–78. Services commenced on the whole route on 26 September 1999.
