São Francisco, Cape Verde


The São Francisco Bay (Portuguese: Baía de São Francisco, also Porto de São Francisco) is a bay on the southeastern coast of the island of Santiago, Cape Verde. It is situated 8 km northeast of Praia, the capital of Cape Verde.

The bay is about 5 to 6 km long and about a kilometer wide. The village of São Francisco is to the west and is inside the city of Praia and forms a part of the subdivision of the rural portion of the East of Praia. The bay covers two municipalities, the other is in São Domingos, where a resort village known as Sambala Village in Vale da Custa is located, nearby is the Ponta do Lobo lighthouse, the lighthouse on the east of the island. A kilometer east of the bay has its waters over a kilometer deep and 10 km southeast is the ocean floor.

It also has a beach named Praia de São Francisco which is about 300 meters long and lies in two municipalities, 80% of it is in São Domingos. Two streams empties in and within the beach, Ribeiras de São Tomé and de Ema.

The village and the bay were mentioned in the 1747 French/Dutch map by Jacques Nicolas Bellin along with "Portate". and later the 1888 map by J. Dosseray as "Portal de S. Francisco" as part of the Hispanosia map collection

n the late 2000s, inside the municipality of Praia, Caminho de Baía de São Francisco started construction which changed the route between Praia and the beach bypassing Vale da Custa and Sambala Village was constructed, though the road with Vale da Custa and Milho Branco via Cancelo do Este would pass by the beach.

Codé di Dona who later became a singer spent his childhood in the settlement.
