West of Rui Vaz at is municipal boundary is Monte Tchota elevating 1,041 m where the island's transmitters are located broadcasting radio and television to much of the island and all the way west to the easternmost parts of the island of Fogo. Its geology of that mountain is of the Pico da Antónia and its rock formation which also dominates the west of the area.

Also in that area is Pico da Antónia Natural Park.
About 1 km northwest is Longueira, part of São Lourenço dos Órgãos which is accessed by pathway, auto access is only via the island's main route, São Domingos and João Teves.
Agriculture is the main industry of the village.

The area was first inhabited at around the start of the 15th century. It is named after one Rui Vaz.
