Rua Lisboa


Rua Unidade Africana, also known as Rua Liberdade d'África or Rua Liberdade da África (Portuguese for "African Liberty") is a street in Mindelo, Cape Verde, running from Avenida Marginal to the historic Palácio do Povo (then the Palácio do Governador). The street is one of the main streets in the city centre.

Until the late 2000s, the street was once called Rua Lisboa (Portuguese for Lisbon), it was renamed due to colonial links, also in the city "Rua Oriental" was renamed to "Rua de Angola" in the same time.

The street begins by the Porto Grande Bay at Avenida Marginal, and contains several examples of colonial architecture, it runs east-west. Mindelo's central Banco Comercial do Atlântico (BCA) branch is around the middle of the street. The street ends near the roundabout intersecting Avenidas Fernando Ferreira Fortes and Baltasar Lopes and Rua Jaime Mota. Other intersection has one intersecting Ruas de Luz and Senador Vera Cruz, the first street connects to the cathedral. Southeast of it is Mindelo's Municipal Market (Mercado Municipal), the other are Ruas Santo António, São João, Moçambique and further east Dr. António Aurélio Gonçalves, named after a Cape Verdean writer of the mid 20th century.

The most famous building is the Mindelo Cultural Center, the only one on the island located next to Avenida Marginal.

One famous cafe, Café Centro is in the middle of the street (once called Café Lisboa). A house on the street, one of the most famous located was named Casa D'Eloy, the place would give the nickname of José Rodrigues Silva to the singer named Djô d'Eloy.
