Royal Air Force Centre for Air Power Studies

The Royal Air Force Centre for Air Power Studies (RAF CAPS) is a Royal Air Force sponsored think tank and research centre which engages in the study of air and space power.

The centre was launched on 23 August 2007 by Air Chief Marshal Sir Glenn Torpy, Chief of the Air Staff. It has direct links to the Royal Air Force's - Air Staff and brings together academia with serving members of the RAF to analyse how air power has been used in the past and how best it might be used in modern, complex and increasingly ambiguous operating environments. It aspires to act as the RAF’s centre for strategic and conceptual thinking about air and space power, to "encourage and promote the study of air and space power, particularly within the Service and academia, but also across the broader intellectual community (including the media and other think-tanks)".

The Centre's website www.airpowerstudies.co.uk hosts its journal the Air Power Review, the Chief of the Air Staff's annual reading list, and information of the Chief of the Air Staff's Fellowship Scheme. In addition RAF CAPS runs major conferences such as the Chief of the Air Staff's annual Air Power Conference, in collaboration with the UK's Air Power Association, and academic conferences, in collaboration with the RAF Museum. The RAF CAPS Board is chaired by the RAF's Director of Defence Studies who is supported by the Head of the Air Historical Branch, and academics from King's College London's Air Power Studies Division Air Power Studies Division.
