The men's single sculls competition at the 1984 Summer Olympics took place at Lake Casitas, California, United States of America. The event was held from 31 July – 5 August.
The winner in each heat advanced directly to the semi-finals. The remaining rowers must compete in the repechage round for the remaining spots in semi-finals.
Three fastest rowers in each repechage advanced to semi-finals.
Three fastest rowers in each semi-final advanced to the Final A, while the others to the Final B.
Final B is used to determine 7th – 12th places.
