Romeo High School is located in northern Macomb County, Michigan approximately 30 miles north of the city of Detroit. It is a part of Romeo Community Schools.
Romeo provides a comprehensive 9-12 academic curriculum for students, including College Prep, Independent Study, Vocational, Technical, and Mentor programs. Advanced Placement Courses are offered in English Language, Literature, Calculus, German, Spanish, U.S. History, Music, Studio Art, Computer Science, Statistics and others. Numerous athletic, social, and service opportunities are available for students. Most famously, Romeo is known for being the High School that Grammy nominated recording artist Robert Ritchie, aka Kid Rock attended.
In 1833, Romeo Academy was formed, providing education beyond the primary years from the North Primary School. The Romeo Academy was located inside the Romeo Congregational Church. The Academy was modeled after the successful academies of the East Coast to provide higher education for the local families.
In 1854, the Dickinson Institute was formed to replace the Romeo Academy, acting as a high school. The Dickinson Institute provided education until 1867, when Bruce School District and the Washington School District formed a union school district. The Dickinson Institute was then used as the high school for the new Union School District until 1885 when a new school was built. Romeo High School was dedicated on September 4, 1885 and provided free education for grades seven through twelve. Students from outside the school district were required to pay tuition if they wished to attend. In 1927 the school had a large wing added onto the building. By 1955 it was decided to construct a new high school, in 1957 Romeo High School then moved to its current location on 32 Mile Road. The old high school was then transformed into Romeo Junior High School later to become Romeo Middle School.
In 1957, a high school was built on 32 Mile Road at its present-day location. The building had various changes in 1967, and numerous projects have been completed since then adding various wings to the building to accommodate for the large student population. At one time students were taught in outdoor trailers designed as portable classrooms until additions were completed.
The school district wanted to create a brand new high school but funding failed. Funding was approved to build a satellite school, and Romeo Engineering and Technology Center was built in 2003. Most of the school's technology and career related classes have been moved to the new building. Currently students who wish to attend can either drive or take a bus to the school. Students who take a bus are required to stay at the RETC for half the day to allow the buses to operate effectively, this is often referred to as AM or PM RETC. Students who drive are given more flexibility and can drive between the High School and RETC to allow mixed class hours instead of having to spend half of their day at RETC. The RETC was also built and designed to be added on so that if future funding is provided the school can be added onto in hopes of creating a large high school to replace the current crowded high school.
