Robin Tampoe


Robin Tampoe (29 December 1930 -22 March 2000) was a pioneering film maker from Sri Lanka. He hailed from the Sri Lankan Tamil community but most of his movies were made in the Sinhala language. He is the son of another pioneering filmmaker W.M.S Tampoe.

R.C. Tampoe was born in Jaffna and was the director of over 20 Sinhalese movies released between 1959 and 1974. Highly acclaimed by the Sri Lankan public for his entertainers, Robin Tampoe was also known for his frankness with regard to the way the film industry functioned during the 1970s. Robin Tampoe married Rita Fernando, an ethnic Sinhalese from Ja-ela. They had six children, born between 1961 and 1969. Their eldest daughter Vilasnee Tampoe-Hautin is currently senior lecturer at the University of La Réunion. The other 5 children namely daughters Thiranee,Dulanee,Yuanee and the 2 sons Sanjeeva and Robin jr. Vilasnee authored the biography of Robin Tampoe in 2008 : Tampoe-Hautin, Vilasnee (2008). ISBN .  Not only does the book trace the career of Robin Tampoe but also reveals the deeper issues that underpinned the film industry during its formative phase (1947 - 1967). Currently Sanjeeva Tampoe the elder of the 2 sons is also a film director in Srilanka. Sanjeeva is managing his father's business in the name of R.T film studios in Colombo Srilanka having it's offices in Chennai India and Kuala Lumpur Malaysia. Also involved in importing foreign language films for television. Dubbing television programs and children's movies for television stations in Srilanka having his own recording and dubbing studios in Srilanka. Sanjeeva Tampoe is involved in Film productions in directing. He is also a professional cinematographer film editor and a registered sound engineer under the National Film Corporation of Srilanka.
