Robert More (botanist)

Robert More (1703–1780) was an English politician, academic and botanist.

He was the son of Robert More, the third son of Samuel More. He was admitted to Queens' College, Cambridge in 1721, and matriculated there in 1723. He graduated B.A. in 1725, M.A. in 1728, and became a Fellow.

He travelled widely in Europe; in Spain he became intimate with Benjamin Keene and Spanish ministers, and promoted administrative reform. He was Member of Parliament for Bishop's Castle from 1727 to 1741, and for Shrewsbury from 1754 to 1761; he was mayor of Shrewsbury in 1737. He encountered local opposition in the 1730s from John Walcot, his nephew, who had acquired the manor of Bishop's Castle.

An enthusiastic botanist, More was a friend of Linnæus, and a Fellow of the Royal Society, elected in 1729.
