Riga Township is a civil township of Lenawee County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,439 at the 2000 census. The unincorporated community of Riga can be found within Riga Township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 40.9 square miles (106 km2), all land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,439 people, 514 households, and 404 families residing in the township. The population density was 35.2 per square mile (13.6/km²). There were 543 housing units at an average density of 13.3 per square mile (5.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 97.43% White, 0.07% African American, 0.14% Asian, 1.39% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 514 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 68.7% were married couples living together, 5.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.4% were non-families. 19.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 9.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the township the population was spread out with 27.2% under the age of 18, 6.9% from 18 to 24, 27.1% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 107.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.
