Rick Jones is a Republican politician from Michigan currently serving in the Michigan Senate after having served three terms in the Michigan House of Representatives.
Prior to his election to the Legislature, Jones served one term as the Eaton County Sheriff and had spent 31 years with the sheriff's department.
In 2016, Jones introduced a bill updating Michigan's existing ban on sodomy, which states "a person who commits the abominable and detestable crime against nature either with mankind or with any animal is guilty of a felony" that is punishable by up to 15 years in prison. In Lawrence v. Texas, the United States Supreme Court struck down the sodomy law in Texas and, by extension, invalidated sodomy laws in 13 other states, making same-sex sexual activity legal in every U.S. state and territory. While most U.S. states removed anti-sodomy laws, Michigan is one of 12 that kept the laws 13 years after the decision.
