Richard Wagamese


Richard Wagamese (born 1955, near Minaki, Ontario) is an author and journalist from the Ojibway Wabasseemoong First Nation in northwestern Ontario, Canada.

After being taken from his family via the Children's Aid Society, he was raised in foster homes in northwestern Ontario and eventually was adopted by a family in St Catharines Ontario, and went by the family name of Gilkinson.

Wagamese was a columnist for the Calgary Herald. He has published a number of books, including novels, poetry and biographical work. According to the biography in his novel, Indian Horse, he currently lives outside Kamloops, British Columbia.

In 2015, Canada's Super Channel announced that it was funding a film adaptation of Wagamese's novel Indian Horse, to be directed by Stephen Campanelli and written by Dennis Foon.
