Return of the Living Dead is a 1978 novel based upon the George A. Romero film Night of the Living Dead. The novel was written by John Russo, who had, with Romero, cowritten the original film.A film adaptation based upon the novel appeared in 1985.
It stands as the first example of "zombie literature."
Ten years after the end of the zombie plague, life is back to normal. After a horrific school bus crash, however, the recently dead begin to rise again, to attack and feast on the living.
Russo wrote the book with the intention of developing it into a movie property. The Return of the Living Dead, the 1985 film which resulted, abandoned Russo's plot and took a splatstick approach. It went on to become a cult film.
