Residency show

A residency show is a series of concerts (typically of live music), similar to a concert tour, but only performed at one location. Though residency shows have been a staple of Las Vegas Strip for decades, the term itself appears to be more recent. One of the earliest online/print references is a 2010 article by Robin Leach. According to Billboard, Celine Dion's A New Day... is the most successful residency show of all time, grossing over US$385 million ($444.69 million in 2016 dollars) and drawing nearly three million people to 717 shows. Dion returned to Las Vegas on 15 March 2011 to perform her new show, Celine. She performed her record-breaking 1000th overall Las Vegas show on October 8,2016. Céline Dion leads as the highest grossing solo artist of all time in residency shows (A New Day... and Céline) grossing a total of $650 million (in 2017 dollars).

In 2013, Britney Spears appeared on Good Morning America to announce a two-year residency show at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino, titled Britney: Piece of Me, which began in December 2013. The show, which features many of Spears' hit songs, is performed 50 times per year and was named "Best of Las Vegas" in 2015. After completing the original run of the show, Spears revealed that the extension would feature updates to the set list, choreography and costumes. The revamped show, which features the tagline "Remixed. Reimagined. Still Iconic.", opened on February 13, 2016. The residency has been a commercial success since opening, grossing over US$103 million in February 2017. Other major performers, such as Jennifer Lopez and Mariah Carey, have followed in Dion's footsteps and accepted residency offers as well, named Jennifer Lopez: All I Have and #1 to Infinity respectively.
