This article lists the standard gauge railway engines and other standard gauge characters of the television series Thomas & Friends. These are the characters that run on The Fat Controller's railway - the North Western.
The "Steam Team" is introduced in Season 8. It is the name given to the group of core characters on The Fat Controller's (Sir Topham Hatt's) railway as featured in the later seasons: Thomas, Edward, Henry, Gordon, James, Percy, Toby and Emily. There is no such corresponding group in The Railway Series books although a similar group (adding Duck but not including Emily) appears in the book The Eight Famous Engines.
Thomas first appeared in The Railway Series by the Rev. W. Awdry. He is a blue 0-6-0 tank engine.
Thomas's character changes from time to time, from cheeky to wise. He is portrayed as proud to run his own branch line and fond of the coaches, Annie and Clarabel. He has the number 1 painted on both his side tanks.

Henry is one of the first engines to appear in The Railway Series books. He is engine number 3 on the railway and is painted green with red stripes. In Season 1, Henry looks much like Gordon and often suffered from boiler trouble due to design flaws and so he needs special Welsh coal to operate properly. He then has an accident when pulling The Flying Kipper caused by ice and snow, after which he undergoes extensive reconstruction, giving him a new shape. Henry often takes goods trains or the express when Gordon is away.
