Quinta is the Portuguese term for a farm or farmhouse.
It has been used however to also describe vineyards. The civil parish of Quinta Grande on the island of Madeira is also named after the vineyards and farmlands. The Quinta da Bica is historic vineyard.
The term was later also kept to name generally larger land estates that might originally have been used for agricultural purposes, but were converted into residential estates.
The aristocratic estates of Quinta da Regaleira and the Quinta do Relógio in Sintra, as well as the Quinta da Bacalhoa outside Lisbon are well-known examples.
