The Pueblo Viejo mine is one of the largest gold mines in the Dominican Republic and in the world. It is also the first exploited mine by the Spaniards in America. The mine is located in the north center of the country in Sánchez Ramírez Province. The mine has estimated reserves of 25.3 million oz of gold and 120 million oz of silver.Barrick Gold Corporation owns 60% of the mine and Goldcorp Inc. owns 40%.
Gold is recovered from the ore using a pressure oxidation process, performed in four autoclaves which operate at 3.45 MPa and 230 °C.
