Protoichthyosaurus is a genus of ichthyosaur from the early Jurassic of southern England. Two species are known, P. prosostealis and P. prostaxalis.
Protoichthyosaurus was synonymized with Ichthyosaurus by Maisch and Hungerbuhler (1997) and Maisch and Matzke (2000), but an SVP 2016 abstract finds it to be distinct from Ichthyosaurus.
