Sri Pothuluri Veerabrahmam (or Pothuluri Veerambotlayya or Veerappayacharyulu or Veerabrahmendra Swamy) was a Hindu sage and oracle. He is considered to be the author of Kalagnanam, a book of predictions about the future. His prophetic texts are also known as the Govinda Vakyas. He also wrote Jeevaikya Bodha. He had thousands of disciples who followed his principles and theories. Veerabrahmendra's birth date and lifespan are unknown. Conflicting theories hold that he was born either in the 9th century CE (in order to accommodate predictions written in the Kalagnanam about the fall of dynasties during the 9th century) or in the 17th Century CE.
No historical evidence records Veerabrahmam's exact date of birth, but he is believed to be born before the fall of Chola dynasty (Around 9th Century CE). Some believe him to have been born in 1608.
According to legend, Veerabrahmam was born to a religious couple, Paripurnayacharya and Prakruthamba, who belonged to a vishwabrahmin family near the river Sarasvati River in the village of Brahmandapuram. The couple abandoned Swamy at birth and Veerambrahmam was brought up at Atri Mahamuni Ashram near Kashi (present-day Varanasi). Later Veerabhojayacharya, Head of the Papagni Mutt, Chikballapur, Karnataka, was on a pilgrimage with his wife. The couple visited the Sage Atri Ashram, and Sage Atri gave the child to the couple. They received the child as a divine gift and returned to Papagni Mutt. The child was named 'Veeram Bhotlaiah'.
Veerabrahmendra Swamy, then known as the Veerambhotliah at Papagni Mutt authored the Kalikamba Sapthashathi (the manuscript written in praise of goddess Kali) at the age of 11. A few days later, Veerabhojayacharya made a sacrifice and Veerambhotlayya told his stepmother that he had refused to take homage responsibilities and started his spiritual journey. His first disciple was Dudekula Siddaiah. People started listening to Veerambhotlaya's chanting and philosophical poems, and as a sign of respect they called him 'Sri Madvirat Pothuluri Veera Brahmendra Swami'.
Thousands gathered to hear his famous Kalagnanam(Over 14000 prophecies). He predicted that amrutam would come from the bark of a tree, which took place near Markolpalli for 3 days and no human could touch it or drink it. The moment someone placed their hands, amrutam would stop coming out. He is considered to have predicted that Ramakrishna Hegde, M.G. Ramachandran and N.T. Rama Rao would rule in a democracy. He predicted the Kurnool floods. According to his followers, almost 90 percent of his predictions came true. The highly publicized claim that a stone statue in Yaganti temple would come to life and shout aloud has yet to happen. Many stories circulate in Andhra Pradesh about his life, but few are backed with historical evidence.
