Poliglota is a start-up company based in Santiago, which uses an online platform to organize group language classes in cafes and other public places with expert teachers. The company became a profitable business in 2015 after establishing its model of social classes in Santiago, Mexico City and Lima.
The founders of Poliglota, Carlos Espinoza and José Sánchez, met in 2007 at Universidad Católica de Chile and they founded Poliglota in March 2010.. They were after joined by Nicolás Fuenzalida as a Co-Founder. They had the financial support of venture capitalists, including Nazca and Wayra, who have sponsored various projects in Chile and Latin America.
Learning Groups: Learning groups are monthly classes in small groups with expert teachers. These groups are sorted into ability levels and languages. The purpose of these groups is to learn and improve the necessary skills to understand, speak and express ideas in a foreign language. This sessions are based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and are led by coaches who receive constant training in workshops organized by the Academic Team in Poliglota.
Open Groups: Open groups are free conversation events in various languages which are organised through the online platform and social networks. Their purpose is to practice the given language of the Open Group.
Poliglota received the Avonni award for the best educational enterprise. This is an honorary prize for innovation in Chile awarded every year by Television Nacional de Chile, El Mercurio and Foro Innovación with the sponsorship of Corporación de Fomento de la Producción and Ministerio de Economía. Through their unique methodology Poliglota ensures that Social learning (social pedagogy) produces clear effects on student learning in public spaces, emphasising interaction between students, high teaching quality and the building of networks.. Poliglota has been chosen by IADB as one of the most inspiring innovations on education.
