Payback (2013) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It took place on June 16, 2013 at the Allstate Arena in Chicago suburb of Rosemont, Illinois. It was the first annual Payback event, and replaces No Way Out. The event received 186,000 buys, down from the last year's No Way Out pay per view of 194,000.
The professional wrestling matches at Payback featured professional wrestlers performing as characters in scripted events pre-determined by the hosting promotion, WWE. Storylines between the characters played out on WWE's primary television programs, Raw and SmackDown.
After their Last Man Standing match at Extreme Rules in May, which ended in no-contest, Ryback drove an ambulance into the arena on the May 20 episode of Raw, challenging John Cena in an Ambulance match for his WWE Championship. A week later on Raw, Cena responded by turning the challenge into Three Stages of Hell, with the first fall being a lumberjack match, the second fall a tables match, and the originally-decided Ambulance match as the third fall. Ryback accepted the new stipulation, making the match official.
